Google has announced that, starting in June this year, the company may begin withholding income tax from YouTube creators’ earnings. According to the company, these changes will apply to income generated from viewers in the United States.
The tax will affect revenue earned from ads, YouTube Premium, Super Chat, and channel memberships. YouTube creators must submit their tax information to Google AdSense by May 31. The tax rate will range from 0% to 30%, depending on whether a tax treaty exists between the creator’s country and the United States to avoid double taxation.
If a creator fails to provide AdSense with the required tax information by the end of May, Google will automatically apply a tax rate of up to 24% to their entire YouTube earnings—not just the portion generated from U.S. viewers. This potential income tax withholding is tied to changes in U.S. tax regulations requiring Google to collect taxes from creators’ revenue sourced from American audiences.
