Meet Generative Erase in Windows — a Google Magic Eraser Alternative for Photo Editing

The popular Magic Eraser tool, designed for easy removal of unwanted elements from photos, will soon be available not only to users of Google and Samsung smartphones but also to owners of Windows-based computers. Microsoft has announced the introduction of Generative Erase — a new AI-powered feature offering similar capabilities within the Photos app, the default Windows photo editor.

Although its functionality is relatively basic compared to advanced generative models such as OpenAI Sora, Generative Erase is still a useful tool for photo editing, now accessible to a wider range of users without requiring the purchase of a new Pixel or Galaxy device — a clear advantage. In addition, Microsoft is rolling out this feature not only on Windows 11, but is also expanding AI-powered photo editing tools to Windows 10 and Windows 11 on ARM64 devices. Among these features is background removal, allowing Photoshop to be reserved for more complex tasks.

These new tools are already available to Windows Insiders, and the update is expanding to all testers, including Windows 10 users in the Release Preview channel. Microsoft notes that the Photos app version must be 2024.11020.21001.0 or higher. The new features are expected to roll out to stable Windows 10/11 builds soon.

Microsoft has not provided specific details on whether edited photos will contain metadata or watermarks indicating their origin. However, there are already enough AI tools capable of removing such watermarks if desired.
